The following student-athletes earned the Team Academic Award presented by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for the 2016-17 season on Monday, July 24.

A current McDaniel College student is among a prestigious group of recipients from across the nation selected to receive a Gilman Scholarship to study abroad.

Matthew Danis of Germantown, Md., a rising sophomore at McDaniel College, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from Northwest Federal Credit Union's charitable arm, the NWFCU Foundation. The Foundation recognized Danis and 25 other students from Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., California, Florida, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina and Washington during the Foundation's scholarship luncheon on June 21, 2017, at the Chantilly National Golf and Country Club, Centreville, Va.

McDaniel College rising senior Ian Kasaitis of Crofton, Md., is currently sailing with SEA Semester on a rare scientific research voyage to the remote Phoenix Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Ian is one of 24 undergraduates from diverse U.S. colleges and universities who will conduct research to contribute to a growing data set of this largely under--studied region.

Samantha Smith, a rising senior at McDaniel College from Baltimore has been selected for the National Security Scholars (NSSP) program. She has been awarded a $6,500 scholarship for her senior year at McDaniel and a paid summer internship at Lockheed Martin.

Madison Gamble, a rising senior at McDaniel College from Colora, Md., has been selected for the National Security Scholars (NSSP) program. She has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship, assistance with national security clearance processing and a paid summer internship at Northrop Grumman.

McDaniel College awarded more than 325 master's degrees May 23, 2015, at the College's 145th Commencement.

John Henry Bussey, a Political Science and International Studies major at McDaniel College, has been awarded a U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study in Indonesia this summer.

Paola I. Villegas of Burke, Va., graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from McDaniel College. She also received The Edith Farr Ridington Phi Beta Kappa Writing Award during the ceremony. McDaniel awarded 358 bachelor's degrees May 23, 2015, at the College's 145th Commencement.

McDaniel College inducted 33 seniors and three juniors into the Delta of Maryland Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa has chapters at 280 colleges and universities, and more than 600,000 members.
