McDaniel College senior Justin Chapin, a business administration major with minors in entrepreneurship and marketing from Damascus, Md., competed in the fifth annual McDaniel College Entrepreneurship Competition, formerly the Innovation Challenge Finals. CeReal is an app that organizes student activities, interests, and organizations to increase community engagement at colleges.

Prime Reach presented by junior Joshua Arruda, an accounting, economics, and business administration major from Morrisville, Pa., received $1,000 as the People's Choice Award winner of the fifth annual McDaniel College Entrepreneurship Competition, formerly the Innovation Challenge Finals. Prime Reach is a one-stop shop for independent artists and musicians seeking the right promotion. "All playlists are checked through chart metrics to ensure absolutely organic engagement," according to Arruda.

McDaniel College Students on Team Crowned Beauty Won $1K Second Place Prize at McDaniel College Entrepreneurship Competition
Crowned Beauty, presented by sophomores Jani Pierre, a business administration major with minors in entrepreneurship and marketing from Frederick, Md., and Mariama Mohammed, a computer science major from Woodbridge, Va., won $1,000 for second place in the fifth annual McDaniel College Entrepreneurship Competition, formerly the Innovation Challenge Finals. Crowned Beauty will be the first business of its kind in Westminster, Md. "There are no beauty stores that cater specifically to people of color, and it would help McDaniel students who have to travel outside of Westminster to find basic hair products," according to Pierre and Mohammed.

McDaniel College senior Carly Critchfield, an economics and political science major with a minor in Arabic from Grass Lake, Mich., competed in the fifth annual McDaniel College Entrepreneurship Competition, formerly the Innovation Challenge Finals. FluentSpeak presented by Critchfield utilizes short, language-specific assessments to match world language learners together at similar skill levels. "This is the first online platform specifically designed for those seeking to practice and improve their conversational language skills to be used in conjunction with or after completion of their world language studies," according to Critchfield.

Life Tacos, presented by juniors Julianna Dotterweich, an accounting, economics, and business administration major from Timonium, Md., and Jessie Titus, an environmental studies major from Frederick, Md., earned the $5,000 top prize as the first place winner of the fifth annual McDaniel College Entrepreneurship Competition, formerly the Innovation Challenge Finals. Life Tacos aims at giving people healthier food options that are more affordable and accessible.

McDaniel College senior Marlowe Embry of San Jose, Calif., (J.H. Pitman), a member of the McDaniel volleyball team, has been honored by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education as part of its annual Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars Award. This is the third consecutive year that Embry, who is a kinesiology major at McDaniel, has been recognized.

McDaniel College junior awarded Gilman Scholarship to study abroad
Khadijatou Diop, a junior at McDaniel College from Columbia, Md., has been awarded a $5,000 Gilman Scholarship to study abroad through the virtual French immersion program at Universite Laval in Canada. Diop, a French major with a minor in secondary education, is one of 2,386 undergraduate students from across the nation selected to receive the scholarship.

McDaniel College students perform in the McDaniel College Student African Drum Ensemble on Thursday, April 29. The virtual performances can be viewed through a livestream at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. The Student African Drum Ensemble is under the direction of McDaniel music department faculty member Pape Demba "Paco" Samb, a "Senegalese griot," or West African historian, storyteller, singer, poet, dancer, and/or musician.

On April 11, 24 students were inducted into McDaniel College's Delta of Maryland Chapter of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. McDaniel alumnus Gerald H. Miller, who previously served as director of Michigan's largest state agency, the Department of Social Services, was also inducted.

McDaniel College students perform in radio play "Twisted Tales of Poe," which is based on the stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Directed by theatre arts faculty member Gene Fouche, the performance will be broadcast on McDaniel College's student-run radio station, Green Terror Radio (WGTR), on Friday, April 30 and Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m.

McDaniel Free Press co-editors-in-chief learned best practices in connecting local topics to global impacts during a virtual webinar organized by the Council on Foreign Relations. The Local Journalists Webinar was organized by the Council on Foreign Relations and was titled "Think Global, Write Local." It aimed to help students connect local and campus topics to global impacts as well as discuss pursuing careers in journalism.
