McDaniel College Students on Team Life Tacos Won $5K Top Prize at McDaniel College Entrepreneurship Competition

Life Tacos, presented by juniors Julianna Dotterweich, an accounting, economics, and business administration major from Timonium, Md., and Jessie Titus, an environmental studies major from Frederick, Md., earned the $5,000 top prize as the first place winner of the fifth annual McDaniel College Entrepreneurship Competition, formerly the Innovation Challenge Finals. Life Tacos aims at giving people healthier food options that are more affordable and accessible.

McDaniel College Senior Marlowe Embry honored with Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award

McDaniel College senior Marlowe Embry of San Jose, Calif., (J.H. Pitman), a member of the McDaniel volleyball team, has been honored by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education as part of its annual Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars Award. This is the third consecutive year that Embry, who is a kinesiology major at McDaniel, has been recognized.

McDaniel College students perform in the McDaniel College Student African Drum Ensemble on Thursday, April 29. The virtual performances can be viewed through a livestream at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. The Student African Drum Ensemble is under the direction of McDaniel music department faculty member Pape Demba "Paco" Samb, a "Senegalese griot," or West African historian, storyteller, singer, poet, dancer, and/or musician.

McDaniel College junior awarded Gilman Scholarship to study abroad

Khadijatou Diop, a junior at McDaniel College from Columbia, Md., has been awarded a $5,000 Gilman Scholarship to study abroad through the virtual French immersion program at Universite Laval in Canada. Diop, a French major with a minor in secondary education, is one of 2,386 undergraduate students from across the nation selected to receive the scholarship.

McDaniel College students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa national honor society

On April 11, 24 students were inducted into McDaniel College's Delta of Maryland Chapter of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. McDaniel alumnus Gerald H. Miller, who previously served as director of Michigan's largest state agency, the Department of Social Services, was also inducted.

McDaniel College students perform in radio play "Twisted Tales of Poe," which is based on the stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Directed by theatre arts faculty member Gene Fouche, the performance will be broadcast on McDaniel College's student-run radio station, Green Terror Radio (WGTR), on Friday, April 30 and Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m.

McDaniel College students participate in webinar featuring veteran journalists

McDaniel Free Press co-editors-in-chief learned best practices in connecting local topics to global impacts during a virtual webinar organized by the Council on Foreign Relations. The Local Journalists Webinar was organized by the Council on Foreign Relations and was titled "Think Global, Write Local." It aimed to help students connect local and campus topics to global impacts as well as discuss pursuing careers in journalism.

McDaniel College selects 21 students into the inaugural class of the National Security Fellows Program. The National Security Fellows Program pairs with any program of study and provides McDaniel students with robust knowledge, skills, and experience in national security as well as the ability to specialize in an area of interest, such as interstate conflict, intra-state political violence, cybersecurity, ethics, and human rights.

McDaniel College students contract with the Green Terror Battalion

McDaniel College students have contracted non-scholarship with the Green Terror Battalion. The students will continue in the Army ROTC Leadership Development program and ultimately commission as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. Army ROTC has been a tradition at the college since 1919, and the Green Terror Battalion is one of the oldest ROTC programs in the nation.

Four students represented McDaniel College at the Maryland Collegiate Honors Conference, "In Honors, Black Lives Matter," held virtually on Feb. 26-27. McDaniel College Honors students Dalanda Diallo, Signe' Kula, Maxwell Pardoe, and Raquel Sobczak were excited to have the opportunity to present at the conference and enjoyed hearing and learning of the stories and research from other presenters.

McDaniel College students participate in virtual Maryland Independent Higher Education Day

McDaniel College students were chosen to represent the college by meeting with members of the Maryland Legislature during Maryland Independent Higher Education Day on Wednesday, Feb. 24. McDaniel students virtually met with elected officials from Allegany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Howard, and Prince George's counties through the web-conferencing platform, Zoom, due to COVID-19 protocols.

McDaniel College announces its Fall 2020 Dean's List, recognizing full-time undergraduate students for outstanding academic achievement. Highest honors are earned for a semester grade point average of 3.90 or higher, high honors for a grade point average of 3.70-3.89, and honors for a 3.50-3.69 grade point average.

McDaniel seniors participated in the Entomology 2020 Virtual Meeting

Two McDaniel seniors presented research at the Entomological Society of America's Entomology 2020 Virtual Meeting. The meeting featured livestream sessions and symposia on Nov. 16, in addition to on-demand symposia, student competition, and 10-minute presentations, poster and infographics available to be viewed Nov. 11 through Nov. 25. Participants from McDaniel uploaded their slides and posters and recorded an audio presentation to go along with the visuals.

McDaniel College Students Virtually Inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society

McDaniel College students were virtually inducted Oct. 18 into the Alpha Lambda Delta national honor society. Alpha Lambda Delta (First Year Seminar) recognizes students who completed their first year at McDaniel with a 3.7 grade point average (GPA) or higher. Its mission is to encourage superior academic achievement, promote intelligent living and continued high standards and to assist students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their roles in society.

McDaniel College has awarded select first-year and transfer students with Alumni Legacy Scholarships valued at up to $100,000 for each student. Children, stepchildren and grandchildren of alumni who graduated from McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) College are eligible to receive this guaranteed scholarship to attend the college.

McDaniel College has awarded select first-year and transfer students with Educator's Legacy Scholarships valued at up to $100,000 for each student. Children with a parent or guardian who has at least four years of current and consecutive full-time employment at a K-12 school or community college can apply for this guaranteed scholarship to attend McDaniel College. Any service qualifies, such as teachers, administrators, counselors, nurses or support staff, etc.

McDaniel College Students Receive Army ROTC Scholarships

McDaniel College students earned Army ROTC Scholarships. The scholarship, which is awarded based on scholastic, athletic and leadership attributes, covers full tuition, room and board, and fees, plus additional funds for books, as well as a monthly living stipend. The student will be commissioned as a second lieutenant and will be required to serve active duty in the Army Reserve or National Guard upon graduating from McDaniel. Scholarships totaling nearly $1.3 million were awarded to the Green Terror Battalion.
