McDaniel College Students Take the Stage in a Family Panto Performance of Jack and the Beanstalk
McDaniel College celebrates the holiday season with an original British panto performance of the beloved fairy tale "Jack and the Beanstalk."
Performances are Thursday, December 19, and Friday, December 20, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, December 21, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., in WMC Alumni Hall at McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, Md.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors, students, and those with a McDaniel College ID. (Please note: tickets are on sale beginning Monday, December 16.) For ticket information, call 410-857-2448.
Adapted and directed by Ira Domser, McDaniel theatre arts professor, the panto is a British holiday tradition based on a fairy tale or nursery rhyme combining audience participation with music, topical jokes, and slapstick comedy.
According to Domser, "We are creating a new take on this classic, familiar fairy tale by injecting a bit of Vaudeville sensibility, contemporary references and audience participation. The whole family will love this panto-style performance, which combines the slapstick comedy of Commedia dell'Arte with the clever humor of Benny Hill and Monty Python's aEUR~Flying Circus.'"

McDaniel College students perform in the Gospel Choir Concert on Sunday, December 8, 3 p.m., in McDaniel's WMC Alumni Hall located at 2 College Hill, Westminster, Md. It is free and open to the public.
McDaniel College's Gospel Choir, under the direction of Shelley Ensor, music lecturer, performs an eclectic mix of traditional, contemporary, and "out of the box" gospel music, featuring musical arrangements ranging from Kirk Franklin and Donnie Harper to Earth, Wind & Fire and John Lennon. Ensor promises "the concert will showcase the diversity of gospel music and its relevance in today's music culture."

McDaniel College Students Perform in Westminster Symphony Orchestra Concert
The Westminster Symphony Orchestra performs at McDaniel College on Saturday, December 7, 3 p.m. The performance, which is free and open to the public, takes place in WMC Alumni Hall at 2 College Hill, Westminster, Md.
Under the direction of Linda Kirkpatrick, senior lecturer in music, the Westminster Symphony Orchestra is composed of McDaniel students, as well as community musicians.
The concert features Haydn's Symphony No. 104 "London" and Elgar's "Serenade for Strings." Another highlight is Vivaldi's "Winter Concerto."
According to Kirkpatrick, "Vivaldi's 'Winter Concerto' is rarely played since the aEUR~Spring Concerto' is his most popular of the aEUR~Four Seasons.' We thought it appropriate to schedule for a winter concert."

McDaniel College Students Perform in College Band Concert
McDaniel College's College Band Concert is Friday, December 6, 7 p.m. The performance, which is free and open to the public, takes place in WMC Alumni Hall at 2 College Hill, Westminster, Md.
Under the direction of Linda Kirkpatrick, senior lecturer in music, the College Band Concert features musical selections from classical to pops. The band features nearly 50 students, McDaniel alumni and faculty members, as well as community musicians.
According to Kirkpatrick, "We will, of course, feature some holiday-oriented pieces, but this concert will also celebrate many important people throughout history, including aEUR~heroes' Abraham (14th chapter of "Genesis"), Rosa Parks, and those who fought and served in the American Civil War. We have some wonderful music that portrays each of these individuals."

McDaniel College Students Perform in College Choir Concert
McDaniel College's annual College Choir Concert is Sunday, November 24, 7 p.m. The performance, which is free and open to the public, takes place in Baker Memorial Chapel at 2 College Hill, Westminster, Md. McDaniel's 57th annual tree lighting ceremony follows the concert.
The college choir presents "A Choral Banquet" under the direction of Margaret Boudreaux, music professor and department chair, with David Kreider serving as accompanist. In addition to music from all over the world, the concert features several familiar carols during which audience participation is encouraged.
According to Boudreaux, "Since this program takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving, we are presenting a focus on the joys of aEUR~gathering together' for a joyful feast. Themes include food, of course, and also the longings for family and community that are the reasons we set time aside for such feasts throughout the year."
She added, "On one end of the spectrum, we have a splendid baroque setting by Pachelbel of the Thanksgiving hymn aEUR~Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God),' complete with brass ensemble. On the other end, we'll present the more aEUR~down to earth' look at feasting by P.D.Q. Bach in the choral movements from aEUR~The Seasonings' with slide whistles and kazoos. In between, we have both serious and satirical settings by Palestrina, Mendelssohn, and contemporary composers such as Ysaye Barnwell, John Rutter, Eric Whitacre, and others."

The Woodwind Quintet performs Eric Ewazen's "Roaring Fork" and a movement from Haydn's "Trio No. 1." The Flute Quartet follows with Sara Bassingthwaighte's "Echoes of the Ancients," Anne McGinty's "Ambage," and Catherine McMichael's "Falconer." The Flute Choir concludes with "Canyon Dreams" and "Echoes in the Wind (A Native American Soliloquy)," both by Phyllis Avidan Louke, and "Free As a Child" by local composer Jonathan Cohen.

McDaniel College Students Perform in Student Chamber Music Ensembles
McDaniel College's Student Chamber Ensembles concert is Thursday, April 25, 7 p.m., in Baker Chapel at McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, Md. The performance is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Linda Kirkpatrick, senior lecturer in music, students in McDaniel's Flute Choir, Flute Quartet, and Woodwind Ensemble perform along with community musicians.
A highlight of the concert is the Flute Choir performing "Latin Verbs," a piece by Glenwood, Md., composer Jonathan Cohen, who will join the choir as the contra bass flutist. The Flute Choir also plans to perform Kelly Via's "Appalachian Suite" and William Boyce's "Symphony No. 4." Selections for The Flute Quartet include Vivaldi's "Spring Concerto" and Catherine McMichael's "A Gaelic Offering." In addition, the Woodwind Quartet is performing Hindemith Quintet and William Grant Still's "Folk Suite No. 4."
