McDaniel College senior Kayla Catlin of Eldersburg continues nonprofit internship remotely

McDaniel College senior Kayla Catlin of Eldersburg (21784) has continued an internship remotely for the philanthropy department at Carroll Lutheran Village. Catlin, an English and cinema double major with minors in writing and music, is participating in the internship as part of McDaniel College's Writing for Nonprofit Organizations course.

According to Josh Ambrose, associate dean of Campus and Community Engagement at McDaniel College, the Writing for Nonprofit Organizations course strengthens the college's relationship with the Westminster community and gives students firsthand experience by having them complete accredited internships at local nonprofits.

Students research and analyze the communication needs of nonprofit organizations in the course. They also assist in the development of mission statements, fundraising letters, grants, brochures, podcasts, websites and other public relations materials.

At Carroll Lutheran Village, Catlin has been making short videos to celebrate the nonprofit's 40th anniversary, utilizing old photos, newspaper clippings and newsletters. She's also been conducting research for grant opportunities that could aid Carroll Lutheran Village.

"I think the liberal arts education is all about learning how to adapt to unforeseen circumstances and how to get through challenges," Catlin said. "I think it has been an adjustment for all of us, but, because we have learned how to persevere in the face of challenges and to never give up until a task is completed, I believe this semester will be successful nonetheless."
